Many clinicians are under the false assumption that “minimally invasive” means “wait and watch”. In actuality, minimally invasive dentistry focuses on intercepting the disease process medically and surgically. The concept of maximum intervention has opened the door to new diagnostic testing and treatment modalities for dental caries. This course provides an introduction and overview of dental caries disease processes, and how best to treat lesions using medical and surgical models. Emphasis will be placed on novel treatments for caries and how to effectively manage high caries risk patients.
After this course, participants will be able to:
a. Identify risk factors for high caries risk patients.
b. Understand how to intervene medically in the caries process.
c. Indicate when, where, and how to use appropriate restorative materials.
d. Control rampant caries with esthetic restorations.
e. Prolong the life of restorations in all patients.
