With the decreased use of direct metallic restorative materials, new tooth colored alternatives have been designed for optimized physical and optical qualities Given ample time, moisture control, appropriate size, ideal enamel margins, and a cooperative patient, excellent results can be achieved with composite restorations. However, composite materials have limitations creating the need for a restorative material suitable for use in less than ideal conditions. Xerostomia, the most common listed side effect among common prescription drugs, can significantly increase root caries and is estimated to be present in 25 percent of our adult patients.

Glass Ionomer restorative materials release fluoride helping to reduce recurrent decay. In addition to simplified ease of use, glass ionomer materials can reduce post-operative sensitivity and enjoy a stable long-term bond to dentin. As a bioactive material it is a therapeutic alternative to composite resin materials.   ( disclaimer , ADA CERP Statement )
